DAY 1: LISBON
Arrival Lisbon. This evening, you will experience firsthand, a Portuguese ritual – strolling through town to sample petiscos. (small plate dishes). The aromas of garlic, olive oil, cheese and saffron will tempt you as you mingle with locals in the city’s best establishments.
DAY 2: LISBON
Highlights of your day: begin at the Belem Tower, the location where Portugal’s greatest explorers set off for the New World. Take the tram uphill to the historic Moorish citadel and find the best views of Lisbon available. Ride Lisbon’s remarkable public elevator, a cast-iron masterpiece.
DAY 3: SINTRA
Highlights of your day: live a day-in-the-life of Portuguese royals with a tour of their summer residences. From 16th century Palacio da Vila to turn-of-the-century Quinta da Regaleira, your day is a look into the lap of luxury.
DAY 4: LISBON
Enjoy a day at leisure in Lisbon. We suggest the Fundacao Calouste Gulbenkian, home to the art collection of one of the 12th century’s most enigmatic men.
DAY 5: COIMBRA
En route to the Douro Valley, stop in Coimbra. See the sixth oldest university in Europe, Coimbra University, and the resplendent botanical gardens.
DAY 6: DOURO VALLEY
Today you will explore parts of the Douro River valley, home to the finest port wine producing estates in the country. Board a private cruise that will lead you lazily down the Douro River.
DAY 7: PORTO
Behold the entrancing countryside en route to Porto. The rest of the day is yours to spend at leisure. We will let you know our favorite place to eat (and of course drink) in Porto.
DAY 8: PORTO
Highlights of your day: the landmarked neo-gothic Lello & Irmao Bookstore, which has been open since the 19th century, the Stock Exchange Palace or Palacio da Bolsa, the Fundacao de Serralves, one of the highlights of Portugal for art lovers and a private wine tour to several of Porto’s famous port lodges.
DAY 9: GUIMARAES
Highlights of your day: the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Guimaraes, where Portugal’s first king, Alfonso Henriques was born. Visit the quietly beautiful Romanesque cloister of the church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira. View the delicate filigree jewelry native to Viana do Castelo.
